Role Overview:

Uncommon Sense is working with an ambitious new client, a prominent figure dedicated to defending free speech, human rights, and the foundational values of Western civilisation. Their work involves addressing key challenges posed by radical ideologies, technocracy, and cultural communism. The client is on the lookout for a Managing Editor.

The Managing Editor will lead a new alternative publishing house as it builds from a small writing team to a global media platform. This role involves overseeing the editorial direction and daily content output of the platform, ensuring all content meets high standards in accuracy, tone, and style. The Managing Editor will ensure high editorial standards and collaborate closely with the Editor at Large on key editorial decisions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Editorial Collaboration: Work closely with Editor at Large and Uncommon Sense on editorial policies and positioning.
  • Strategic Planning: Develop and implement editorial strategies that align with the platform’s goals.
  • Oversee Weekly Outputs: Manage content including news, commentary, long reads, and newsletters.
  • Content Creation: The Managing Editor will be engaged in writing original content, including articles, commentary, and editorials, as needed.
  • Content Quality Assurance: Ensure all content meets high editorial standards in terms of accuracy, tone, and style.
  • Proof for Readability: Review all content to ensure it is clear, concise, and accessible to the target audience.
  • Team Management: Lead the writing team, including full-time staff and guest authors.
  • Budget Management: Oversee the editorial budget, including managing costs related to freelance contributors, special projects, and other editorial expenses.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in editorial management.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent writing and editing abilities.
  • Ability to maintain high journalistic standards.
